Lest We Forget . . . the horrors of war. Lest We Forget . . . the destruction left behind. Lest We Forget . . . the senseless loss of life. Lest We Forget . . . so we insist on remembering . . . especially on this, the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War . . . the war to end all wars that didn't. Will we never learn?

We began our service with Chloe playing the Last Post and a moment of silence, remembering. Then we reflected on the world as it is . . . on war and on wars . . . on peace and on why it seems to be so fleeting . . . and on what we can – and should – do to bring about peace. We asked two important question in our message: Can I? Will I? Click here to read themessage . . . then respond to the challenge.

In yesterday's message I pointed out that our weekly "feature slides" always have some sort of tie-in to our message. Fans of the movie the Princess Bride will recognize this picture of Wesley – "Farm Boy" – and his deferential as you wish in reply to Buttercups' demands.

I wonder . . . do we expect God to be equally submissive or deferential to our wants, requests, and demands? This coming Sunday we'll look at Jesus' teaching on this in our message: Wish.

You might recall that on May 18 of this year Cubana de Aviación Flight 972, a scheduled domestic flight from José Martí International Airport, Havana, Cuba, to Frank País Airport in Holguín, Cuba crashed shortly after takeoff, killing 116 of the 117 passengers on board. Among the dead were 10 pastors and spouses of the Cuba Church of the Nazarene who were returning from a district conference.

10 Nazarene children were left orphans because of this tragedy and need help and support. Your church board has committed to meet the needs of one of these children for the next 10 years at a cost of $30.00 a month. If you would like to be part of the support team, please give through your tithe envelope  or on-line giving, indicating "Child Sponsorship". Our treasurer will remit the support funds in a timely manner.

The Church of the Nazarene in Cuba is growing at an amazing rate – it has more than doubled in the past few years, with 128 churches now in existence. In faith, the church board has committed to support a second pastor and church. Thank you for your generosity in compassionate giving.

Speaking of compassion locally . . . the Fifth Annual CHRI Pajama Drive is underway. The station is asking for donations of new PJs, which will be distributed through local and rural food banks and to given to families who face difficult challenges such as poverty, addiction, domestic violence and mental health challenges. The Pajama Drive will continue until the end of February. Click here for more information.

You might also want to think about a reverse advent calendar. Instead of opening a door to take a treat [mmm, Lindt chocolate!], place a non-perishable food item in a basket each day of Advent and at the end of Advent take the basket to a food bank.

Speaking of compassion denominationally . . . the 2017-2018 Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Canada gift catalogue can be found on-line [click here to access a copy; you can also pick one up from the table at the back of the sanctuary]. You can give through the church or directly to NCMC either on-line [click here] or by mail.

November . . . is Movember . . . and forgive me for abusing the newsletter to remind you of the fact that I am trying to do my part to raise funds for men’s health issues. If you would like to donate [and I will include the link in the Musings for the month of November], click here to go to my fund-raising page. Thank you!

The China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe will present the production My Dream at Algonquin College Commons Theatre Wednesday November 14 at 7:30 pm. Call Yi Cui [a member of Trinity Community Garden] at 613-422-6189 for tickets.

Let me know if you'd like a copy of the slide show presentation/copies of the pictures that were shown at the anniversary banquet. They can be copied to a flash disk or to a CD.

The plans for an interactive prayer time continue, as do our hopes to live-stream our Sunday services via Facebook video. We will "piggy-back" into the system the Spanish Church is setting up. Unfortunately, things are taking longer for them than expected. We'll keep you updated and will be "on the air" as soon as we can.

Time . . . the year . . . has gone by so quickly. The First Sunday of Advent is just three weeks away. As calendars fill quickly, please note the dates and times of our own church activities.

  • The first Sunday of Advent is December 2 . . . we'll celebrate communion in our service as we prepare our hearts for the season.
  • The second Sunday of Advent is December 9 . . . our day of musical celebration. Everyone who would like to share a special Christmas song or reading is welcome to participate – please see Matt as we look forward to a great time of congregational worship. Following our service we will go out for our Festive Fellowship at a nearby restaurant . . . place to be confirmed this week.
  • The third Sunday of Advent is December 16. We will gather for our annual open house and fellowship at the parsonage for the evening [beginning at 6:30pm].
  • The fourth Sunday of Advent is December 23 . . . a time of worship and wonder as we look to the manger and the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes.
