Dark. Dark was the day – no, dark was the whole weekend.

And yes, we are getting ahead of ourselves as we talk of Easter [or crucifixion] – weekend. But Lent leads us to Easter, and our series on Jesus' words from the cross is leading us to Easter. The weekend was dark. And yesterday's "word" was as dark as they come.

Forsaken. Rejected. Abandoned. Forsaken. Words that describe how Jesus felt. He called out to God: Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? He cried out My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Broken in body and spirit, He felt alone in His agony . . . friends gone, family gone, God gone.

You may think . . . how is that supposed to inspire me today? You may think how is that supposed to encourage me today, when I am feeling forsaken, rejected, abandoned, and forsaken? It might help to remember that feelings do not always reflect truth. As Dom Helder Camara says, For Christians . . . the last word is always hope. Jesus may have thought that He was forsaken and abandoned, but the Spirit of the Father was with Him. We may think that we are forsaken and abandoned, but the Spirit of the Father stays with us. Even though it might seem like it, God will never abandon us. And more than that, we have each other . . . we are community, and there are others to lift us out of the pit of forsakenness if we are not able to do the lifting ourselves. We near the end of our study of the CrossWords. This coming Sunday we will look at words that suggest that what Jesus started is over – we look at John 19:30 and see Completion . . . but at the same time [spoiler alert!] it isn't over, it's just beginning!

Nadine will share the April Missions Moment and we'll hear the goal for our Easter Offering.

Last week I suggested that time just creeps up on us, and that even though we schedule events all of a sudden they can just "be there". It happened . . . even more than we realize! The joint service with the Bridlewood congregation was supposed to take place last night, but March 24 "snuck up" on them and on us [can we still blame it on the time change?]. So the service was cancelled – postponed – because we weren't ready for it. We'll let you know the new date as soon as we do!

Until then . . . don't forget that during Holy Week we will join with Bridlewood Church for services that will lead us to Easter . . . Monday through Thursday evenings at 7:00, with a service on Good Friday at Bridlewood at 4:30. Each church will host her own Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday services.

  • April 15: at Bridlewood, 7:00 pm
  • April 16: at Trinity, 7:00 pm
  • April 17: at Bridlewood, 7:00 pm
  • April 18: at Trinity, 7:00 pm
  • Good Friday: at Bridlewood, 4:30 pm

Our spring service of music and celebration is planned for April 28 – we encourage everyone to participate . . . to sing  . . . to read . . . to share something! Matt will speak to us about our participation closer to the date.

We have invited the members of the Ottawa Misfits motorcycle group to join us on May 26. We will prepare breakfast for the group and they will join us in our worship service before a "blessing of the bikes". Pray that God will bless and use this outreach opportunity for His glory. Our message: We're All Misfits!

The nursery school is once again fundraising, again through Purdy's chocolates. Order your Easter chocolates by signing in to your [or starting an] account at Purdy's [click here] – use customer number 37568. There is a nice selection of chocolate available. Order by April 3 [Wednesday]; pick-up is April 17 [the Wednesday before Easter] at the church. Enjoy!
